This blog has been lying dormant for some time now, however I have still been busy going lots of places and recording this year. I have made a decision to refrain, for the time being, from uploading short clips onto soundcloud. Instead I have been gathering recordings based loosely around the idea of local woodland at different times of day. This has been a pleasurable exercise for me as I've been able to revisit and rediscover a lot of natural habitats that first inspired me in various ways; but I have also found a few new places near to home that I never knew existed. I've had some fantastic encounters practising some different long duration recording techniques and I'm excited about getting it edited together soon. Finally I am hoping to get a website up soon as a better platform for my work than this blog.

You can hear a little bit of what I've been up to by following this link to one of the releases that Sonic Terrain made for World Listening Day. Mine is the last track... http://sonicterrain.bandcamp.com/album/str-012-wld-2014-fragility
Thanks....
Here's a recording I made on March 7th whilst walking in the Brecon Beacons. I did a circular walk up from the Taf Fechan Forest, then up the left hand side of the reservoir along Graig Fan Ddu, and over Corn Du, Pen Y Fan and Cribyn. Finally dropping down into the valley to join the far end of the reservoir.

Down in the valley near the Upper Neuadd Reservoir the whole area was alive with spring activity. There were many Frogs mating in drainage ditches and small pools. I heard the odd croaking as I was walking along, but every time I stopped and attempted to get nearer I frightened them away. However I later discovered they had also managed to reach the mountain pass between Pen Y Fan and Cribyn.

Towards the end of last summer I visited my friend in Norway. We went for quite a few walks in different places and I usually had at least my handheld recorder with me. The recordings which I worked with here are mainly from our walk up Kjerag to the popular tourist spot where a boulder is stuck above a massive drop.

I don't usually feel like including elements such as footsteps, breathing and so on in my recordings however for this little project I wanted to guide the listener through the landscape.

Myself, Alex and his dog (called Skye) move across the mountain terrain
and ecounter a herd of sheep moving down the valley. I wanted to jump
back to Hundvag for the final section, the rising sound of the river
becomes almost uncomfortable until suddenly it breaks. The setting is now a
quiet woodland bridge with a stream running below, whilst
engines of tankers in the port of Stavanger hum in the distance.
It's a great bit of kit that I can slot in lots of different places to hear lovely subtle sounds.

This first recording was captured in a woodland near my parents home. I was on a walk and noticed a rotting tree stump with an ant colony working busily away inside. I went home and got my recording equipment and found to my surprise just how noisy these small creatures are!

On another wander I came across a wire fence which created lovely sounds in the wind one afternoon.

Wytham Woods is owned by Oxford University and is used primarily for research purposes. It's very large and well maintained, what's unusual however is that it's not open to the public. However I managed to obtain a permit for walking there. It's an ideal area of woodland for uninterrupted recording sessions.

One grey afternoon at the end of a long walk within the woods it began to rain and I placed my contact microphone on a fence. The resulting sounds of the rain hitting the fence have a particularly musical quality. I recall as I stood listening for the best part of an hour, that I forgot I wasn't listening to a composition of some description.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So here is my selection in the order that they came to mind...

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Moderat

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">II

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The second album from the Apparat and Modeselktor collaboration and it's rather nice. I was initially put off by the first single Bad Kingdom, but the vocals from Sasha Ring grew on me.

Anyway the third track entitled Versions is my favourite. It's a nice slow builder. I can't find it on youtube but someone's uploaded it to vimeo with clips from the film Bowie's son made, Moon. So watch that as well or don't maybe...
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This album is the work of Mike Paradinas (<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">μ-ziq) and his partner Lara Rix-Martin. Also the bloke from Gravenhurst does vocals. The first two tracks are my favourites.

I honestly haven't listened to it very extensively, probably because it requires total attention and isn't the sort of thing you can have playing in the background whilst you re-type your CV. I was excited for this album as it's been a few years since Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique which I believe is a break up album of sorts as the name suggests. It's an album of woozey melancholia that I don't rate too highly. Chewed Corners on the other hand sees Paradinas getting back to his roots and revising his unique sound. It's quality all the the way through but my favourite moment must be the last track which is a bit of a banger...

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Milieu is the handy work of Brian Grainger, who makes music under various aliases that range widely in style. He is also very prolific in his output. I've been into his music for quite a few years now and pick up one or two of his releases when I've got the spare cash. This year Grainger announced that he was bringing out a new Milieu album after being silent under that name for quite a while. It was early summer by the time my copy arrived from the US and served as a brilliant soundtrack for the sunshine. It's full of analog goodness from start to finish but my favourite tracks are Carpet Acid and Set Phasers To Debonair. The whole album can be streamed over at the <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">bandcamp<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> page.

Lynch brought out Crazy Clown Time in 2011 which is very good despite being a rubbish title for an album. Lynch creates some fantastic weirdness here, it's not his first musical efforts as he worked closely making music for his films from the very beginning on Eraserhead. The soundtrack from which saw a lovely re-release on vinyl in 2012, also this dance mix needs to be heard. This year saw the release of The Big Dream, these tracks are more ballad like than the content of Crazy Clown Time, but the Lynch sound is still there with his whiney lyrics. You can listen to the whole thing on YouTube...

I honestly thought the album cover was a bad joke when I first saw it, but then someone told me it was real... also I don't know why the most boring song on the album, Where Are We Now, was the first single. So I wasn't too hopeful about this album being anything but utter shite, but as it turns out I rather like it! The sound is somewhat reminiscent of the Scary Monsters and Super Creeps album, which is brilliant. Although Bowie is never going to be as good as he was this is still worth a listen. Dirty Boys is probably my favourite track, I also like this remix that came out the other month in time for the inevitable 3 disc deluxe edition...

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A Strangely Isolated Place is kind of a blog website featuring music of ambient goodness. The name of the site derives from Ulrich Schnauss' second album. The Place Series is a great on going part of the site in which artists from around the world submit a few tracks inspired by a specific place. I have been introduced to a lot of great music through this series, my favourite would have to be Yeter which is sublime. If I knew how/had the patience to make music this is what I would want it to sound like. This summer ASIP put out a compilation album of remixed tracks from The Place Series. The result can be streamed in full on bandcamp. I love the last track, Odd Shapes - Desert Plant (Echaskech remix). Richard Skelton first came to my attention a few years ago when Landings was receiving a lot of attention. His music has deep ties with the landscape of Northern England where he lives and works. You can really feel the isolation and bleakness in his music from the densely layered roughness of the various stringed instruments and field recordings. Early special editions from Skelton were lovingly hand made, and even included items from the landscape itself such as soil or pine cones. For this latest release Skelton and his partner Autumn Richardson have returned to south-western Cumbria to provide inspiration for Succession as a follow up to Wolf Notes. The result is an somewhat more soft and subtle than previous releases, but nonetheless hauntingly beautiful. It is available digitally on bandcamp along with Echoless, which features unabridged compositions from Succession.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">What do you get when you mix electronic music and bells? Amazing music. Pantha Du Prince is a great producer who for this latest venture teamed up with the Norwegian Bell Laboratory group. It's only a five track album, but Spectral Split is a seventeen minute voyage through layers of bells that drop into catchy beats. The YouTube video below makes it look like they're a great live act as well, I'm sorry I missed them in London. Hey ho.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I couldn't do a round up of this years music without including the massively anticipated new BOC album. It's a strange album for me. Having listened to it several times I feel that the album conveys a general feeling of pessimism. The album cover looks like the shadow of a lost city, perhaps destroyed by its inhabitants own carelessness and greed. The track titles point to loss and desolation, for example, Cold Eath, Reach For The Dead, Sick Times, Collapse and Nothing is Real. The album isn't necessarily depressing as a result, but there are dark undertones. As Sandison explains in an interview with <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Guardian<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">, "In a way we're really celebrating an idea of collapse rather than resisting it. It's probably quite a bleak album, depending on your perspective." Despite these bleak emotions that I'm not used to associating with BOC, it's up to their usual standard and in time I hope it will age like a fine wine. My favourite track has a lovely feeling of endlessness...

Westhay Moor is an area of peat wetlands south of the Mendips which I drove to one afternoon because it looked interesting on my map. I stopped on one of the long straight roads at a small bridge and lowered both hydrophones into the water.

The water was full of plant life and fairly stagnant. When the sun came out from behind the clouds at the 2 minute mark, the tempo increases which leads me to believe it is mostly gases being released from decaying vegetation that can be heard.
I spent the day walking on Blakeney Point on the Norfolk coastline. I took a few photos that I might upload here at some point. It is a fantastic area, very quiet and remote. I plan on returning there with a microphone.

So the field recording has hit a bit of a standstill in recent times. My life has been a bit up in the air as I've moved back home from Bristol, and other things have been occuring that have kept me away from having much creative time and headspace. I think part of the problem is that I'm not fond of editing and looking at computer screens for long periods of time. So when I do occasionally go out and record things I rarely get round to uploading them.

However one of the things I've felt continually frustrated with is the lack of a proper professional microphone. I've worked with my Zoom H2, Fostex FR-2LE, and a pair of handmade omni-directional 'Brady Mics', as I named them after the man who kindly made and sold a pair to me. The setup I was primarily using was the Fostex and Brady mics, but I feel i've reached the limits of this now. So I have my eye on a Audio-Technica BP4025, which I believe is the sort of microphone I'm looking for. It has low self noise, produces a fantastic stereo image and looks sleek and compact. I had been considering the Rode NT4. But although I've used this mic before and was very impressed with it, I did find it a bit bulky and heavy. I have also read reviews comparing the two and the general consensus is that the BP4025 is much better.

I don't know when I'll be picking this microphone up. Probably next month after I've earned a bit of cash because it's not particularly cheap!

Anyway aside from all that I recently gave Traktor a go and made a mix of some random tracks I like. So here it is:
Anyway I should be getting more active with my sound experiments now I'm a bit more settled. I have a lot of recordings I need to listen through and tag and I've got a few ideas going on, but today I put something together I had been meaning to do for ages but kept forgetting.

Talkingmakesnosense - Volumes In G (Sicily mix) by miles out in the field

This is the result of a recording I made whilst stopping at an organic farm in Sicily in the summer of 2009, the track is playing out of a small stereo in the kitchen whilst I sat outside. I think my original intention was to use it as an opening for a mix series I was occasionally doing at the time (look at the exploration of ambience stuff on my soundcloud) but I never got round to it I suppose. Anyway it brings back great summer memories for me of the intense midday sun, dusty grounds, hammocks, weather vanes, vineyards, old tool sheds, sleeping out in the open air, and so on and so on. The artist Talkingmakesnosense is also terrific, so do check him out.

Cheers, more stuff soon.Miles Bowehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05256391870992373173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127147997868551581.post-87147259675341478052011-08-14T03:33:00.000-07:002011-08-14T03:33:39.411-07:00Goonhilly Winds Goonhilly winds by miles out in the field
Whilst trekking about on Goonhilly Downs I encountered some rough weather as a low mist descended all around. Sat beside the large fencing that encloses the satellite station I began to record the sounds of the howling wind, whispering grass, and pattering rain.
They are a terrific pair of mics but it's taken me some time to work out a way to effectively shield them from the wind, due to being busy finishing off my degree and finding a solution that was compatible with my student finances!

I instinctively turned to Rycote and found their lavalier furries however these didn't do the trick. I determined what I needed was something like the Baby Ball Gag to create 'dead air' around the microphones, and finally a fur covering to enclose the gag or caging. I firstly found my enclosure for the mics in the form of a tea infuser, I bought mine from eBay, searching for the largest ones I could find. I cut a small hole to pass the cable through and then slotted the mic housing into the space. A coating of duct tape around the mic housing protects it from scratching from the infuser, I'm not totally satisfied with this solution however I imagine I could smooth the edges somehow...

Infusers with holes cut

My inspiration for the fur covering came from the Rycote Zoom H2 windjammer I own. I noticed how it fit quite comfortably around the tea infuser, yet did not create a satisfactory seal around the bottom. The next step was to get hold of some fake fur, I aimed to find the longest pile and thinnest backing. So with the help of my mother and her sewing machine, we copied the pattern of the H2 windjammer! However we added an elastic drawstring around the bottom to gather the fabric and create a wind proof seal, also in addition to the thin backing of the fake fur a piece of silk was sewn. This not only provides a further layer of protection but also prevents the infuser from catching on the fur.

Due to this fact many take sound and listening to their environments for granted, however listening is a deeply rewarding exercise. Work from musicians and sound artists such as John Cage, David Toop and Chris Watson detail the deeply affecting nature of sound. In the preliminary research for this essay the focus was on those mentionings of an ‘essence’ in sound, also listening and the relationship between that sense and human perception. The key case study in reference to these areas was the Hungarian film Hukkle (Pálfi 2002) as the sound mix presented in this film is unique in its execution. The objective of the following essay it to determine the extent to which sound is a factor in the forming of perception and memory, and explore Hukkle as a transferable mode of listening. The first chapter explores John Cage in relation to his ‘silent piece’ 4’33” and the pioneer of musique concrete, Pierre Schaeffer. After tracing these early steps in rethinking the way sound is heard, the second chapter focuses on Hukkle and looks in depth at the sound mix. The final chapter explores music and field recording before concluding on the findings.'

Quick bit of news about an upcoming film festival showcasing the work of my fellow classmates! My film will be screened on the last night of the festival in the place of 'Virtual Duality'. I've been submitting Surface Tension to various festivals, so hopefully more news of it being shown to come soon. Well here it is, the final edit for my short film piece.

I will be designed some packaging for it to go in and will also be working on a tape sometime after next week.

The video has a password because some film festivals have guidelines against an online 'premier'. There were about ten other pieces dotted around the small dark rooms. I want to thank all the people and my friends who came along despite the pressing urgency to celebrate dissertation hand in! A couple of pics...
I've not uploaded Coastal Path anywhere yet but instead I would like to put a few copies on tape and distribute some to those who want one. I got a cassette deck last year with the intention of recording something to tape because I was inspired by the comeback the format seemed to be experiencing. Unfortunately I never really got round to it. Feedback on this idea would be appreciated, I would probably try and put something new on side b as well.

Editing on the film will begin properly in the next few days, a little more stuff needed to be shot as well next month. Updates to follow soon on how that goes, hopefully when it's done I'll design some nice covers and packaging.

Happy Easter to all!
The plan was to regularly post updates on my experimental sound project for Uni, but it seems very time consuming to upload and format a decent post on here! Anyway filming and sound recording have been going well, there is not much left to do before I start putting it all together.

One thing I have completed is a short piece for a sound festival in Falmouth at the end of the month called Resound. Information can be found here - http://resoundfalmouth2011.tumblr.com/about

It's called Coastal Path and is the beginning of a theme which will be carried on into my film project, due to be completed at the end of May. Coastal Path will either see radio play or installation at the Resound festival, or possibly both.

Here is a press release cover I designed...
An update to come soon of where this can be heard.

Aquarian H2A-XLR with contact adaptor on melting ice.

It was a very pleasant, sunny Sunday morning, not a cloud in the sky, these are ideally the conditions I would like for this location. It had been a very cold night, temperatures reaching below freezing. Patches of ice had formed down the sloping cliffs, I was able to take advantage of this.

Placing the hydrophone on the melting ice patches revealed the incredible sound of the melt water, popping, cracking and bubbling.

I'm unsure at this point whether these sounds will be included in the film. However so far I've been impressed with the Aquarian, which I've only had a couple of weeks.

I also went down to the lake to make some further recordings with the hydrophone. A cold wind was blowing from across the lake causing large ripples to break against the shore. I made two recordings in a reed bed, and one with microphone fully extended on its cable from the shore. Searching for microsounds in the sand proved unsuccessful, what I am hoping to find is a sand shrimp scurrying in the sand. I recorded an example of this creature during the summer. Perhaps it is as of yet too cold for them...
The next day I visited another location after work, located just a little further along the coast is Kynance Cove (SW 68395 13271). I was able to assess the suitability of much less this morning due to a miscalculation with the tide. When the tide is out at the cove a whole new area of beach is exposed, allowing access to Asparagus Island. Scrambling up onto here and round the side is the opening of an underwater cave where the sea is pushed through with incredible force. There is the powerful sound of air being drawn through a small hole in the rock face and spurted back out again, often spraying a cloud of mist with it.
However I am not too concerned as the really impressive sounds are heard above the water. I also experimented capturing the sound of limpets feeding in a small pool, I made a note to explore this further.
The plan was to explore cave areas more which can be seen from the photo on the right, however as I left this location and came back down the Island I realised the tide had come in stranding me! It was a case of taking my boots off and rolling my jeans up and feeling a little embarrassed as some walkers looked on from the headland. Much more attention will be paid to the tide timetable in future.

In other sound related news my involvement with a couple of my friends film projects is coming along. Information on the ten minute short set in a dystopic future can be found here: http://marlboroughroadfilm.blogspot.com/ This should be a fun shoot, me and the director, Alex, have had a play around with the induction coil microphone, so there is the potential for some interesting sound design there. The other project I am involved with is a series of experimental shorts, the first being a dance film. No link to give, but should be gathering atmospheres at some point.
It was one hell of a cold day, and I was struggling with numb hands and feet! The wind was blowing at speeds of up to 20 mph. I also visited The Lizard Lighthouse which will feature within the film.
At the quarry I am hoping to capture the desolate environment of this forgotten place, the quarry has long been out of action however a lot of buildings and signs still stand. A quick google gives you links to urban exploration forums, whilst walking around I found a way into a room with old electrical generators inside. It truly is a great space to explore, the seashore consists of pebbles, which rattle and rumble as the rough sea recedes.
